ABSTRACT
To gain insights into the mechanisms driving cardiovascular complications in COVID-19, we performed a case-control plasma proteomics study COVID-19 patients. Our results identify senescence-associated secretory phenotype, marker of biological aging, as dominant process associated with disease severity and cardiac involvement. FSTL3, an indicator senescence-promoting Activin/TGFβ signaling, ADAMTS13, von Willebrand Factor–cleaving protease whose loss-of-function causes microvascular thrombosis, were among proteins most strongly myocardial stress injury. Findings validated larger patient cohort hamster model, providing new pathophysiology therapeutic implications.
