ABSTRACT
Three anadromous lamprey species support important commercial fisheries in the northern hemisphere, sea Iberian Peninsula and France, European river Baltic Sea countries Russia, Arctic Russia. Pacific lamprey, Caspian Korean pouched are harvested for subsistence local commerce on coast of North America, China Oceania, respectively. Habitat loss caused by human activities rivers have reduced populations collapsed most worldwide. Overfishing is a concern because traditional fishing gears (e.g., pots, fyke nets) target lampreys during their upstream migration, usually physical bottlenecks, which can result exceedingly high mortality. The reduction catches has inflated prices encouraged illegal certain Portugal, Russia). success management actions could be at risk due to knowledge gaps that still exist regarding stock structure, estimates stage-specific mortality, distribution sea, preferred hosts, climate change impacts availability adequate hosts. There an urgent need good-quality data from reported landings also monitoring studies efficacy mitigation restoration efforts habitat restoration, regulations, artificial rearing stocking). Involving general public stakeholders conservation through outreach crucial promote protection ecological cultural values understanding vulnerability.
