ABSTRACT
ObjectivesTo investigate the longitudinal association between MRI-detected osteophyte scores and progression of knee symptoms, whether was modified in presence bone marrow lesions (BMLs) or effusion-synovitis.MethodsData from Vitamin D Effects on Osteoarthritis (VIDEO) study, a randomized, double-blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial symptomatic osteoarthritis (OA) patients, were analyzed as an exploratory study. Western Ontario McMaster Universities Index (WOMAC) used to assess symptoms. Osteophytes, BMLs effusion-synovitis measured using MRI.Results334 participants with MRI information WOMAC score (baseline follow-up) included analyses, 24.3% them having pain increased 2 years later. Statistically significant interactions found osteophytes In BMLs, higher baseline most compartments significantly associated total pain, weight-bearing stiffness, physical dysfunction, after adjustment for age, sex, body mass index, intervention effusion-synovitis. effusion-synovitis, almost all BMLs. contrast, generally not symptom without effusion-synovitis.ConclusionsMRI-detected OPs are stiffness dysfunction presenting but lacking This suggests they could interact synovial abnormalities induce symptoms OA.
