‘Bonkers but good!’ – Using illustration-based interview methods to understand land management and conservation visions

ABSTRACT
Visions help to understand common ground and tensions among citizens stakeholders, supporting inclusive land management conservation solutions the climate emergency biodiversity crisis. With careful design sufficient resource, it is possible bring together communities other stakeholders share perspectives deliberate desired futures, identifying more acceptable alternatives avoiding costly delays. We evaluated researcher participant experiences of illustration-based interviews visions using four studies in Scotland, The Netherlands Spain. These used STREAMLINE, a visual mixed-method interview format thematic illustrated canvases designed provide an creative framing for participants contemplate their future. Participants enjoyed informal format, which reduced pressure, increased comfort through research process, helped thinking reflection about complex topics. They also valued being listened having opportunity views. Researchers appreciated ability triangulate rich qualitative data with variety quantitative measure flexibility adapt suit aims. Positive experience made facilitation easier was stimulating researchers. credibility legitimacy will ultimately depend on specific design-decisions testing, can make approach resource intensive than conventional interviews.
