Synergistic antimicrobial effects of Dryopteris erythrosora extract and mild heat treatment against Staphylococcus aureus

ABSTRACT
Control of pathogenic bacteria using natural plant extracts has potential in preventing the emergence microbial resistance. Also, they are attractive alternatives to antibiotics—particularly food industry—because safer and more environmentally friendly. Among them, Dryopteris erythrosora (DEE) is rich flavonoids that have biological functions, including antioxidant activities, but few been done on their antibacterial activity research. We investigated synergistic antimicrobial DEE mild heat against Staphylococcus aureus. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) S. aureus was 0.125 mg/mL. viable cell count reduced by 5.04 log CFU/mL after a combinational treatment 20 min while or treatments alone produced no inhibition. Propidium iodide fluorescence scanning electron microscopy analyses revealed this effect may be result enhanced membrane damage. Antimicrobial efficiency confirmed stainless steel surfaces: an approximate 6 reduction achieved treatment. However, resulted less than 1.5 reduction. In conclusion, our data showed with as effective disinfection strategy industry.
