ABSTRACT
An R&D project is presented, aimed to develop a high performance gaseous detector of single photons, for the upgrade Ring Imaging Cherenkov Counter RICH-1 COMPASS Experiment at CERN SPS. The has stably operate gain and rate, provide good time resolution insensitivity magnetic field, offer possibility cover very large areas affordable cost. proposed solution based on use novel robust electron multiplier, Thick GEM (THGEM), arranged in multilayer architecture, where first layer coated with photosensitive CsI film. A systematic study response THGEMs various geometrical production parameters different conditions was performed, leading choice set optimal parameters. Prototypes THGEM-based photon detectors able efficiently detect photons have been built, tested laboratory operated test beam exercises typical 105 better than 10 ns. engineering aspects building area (600×600 mm2) are presently being investigated.
