ABSTRACT
Abstract A novel alcohol and phenol containing polyamine ligand H2L (H2L = N,N′-bis(2-hydroxybenzyl)-1,3-bis[(2-aminoethyl) amino]-2-propanol) and its Co(III) and Cu(II) complexes, [CoL]ClO4 (1) and [Cu(H2L)Cl]ClO4 · CH3OH · H2O (2) have been synthesized and characterized. Single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses indicate that both of the complexes are mononuclear. The Co(III) center in complex 1 has a distorted octahedral geometry, with four N atoms of L2− situated in the equatorial plane, and two deprotonated phenoxo O atoms strongly coordinated at the axial positions. Along the c-axis, the [CoL]+ cations are connected alternatively by double ClO 4 - and double alkoxyl hydrogen-bonding bridges, affording a 1D supramolecular structure. In 2, the Cu(II) center has a similar coordination geometry, whereas the axial positions are weakly coordinated by Cl− and a protonated phenolic O atom. Approximately along the ab-plane, a 2D structure is assembled via multiple hydrogen bonds involving the alkoxyl, phenoxyl, amino, Cl− and the lattice water molecules. In this work, the structures of the supramolecular coordination assemblies are shown to be tuned by various factors, such as the donor sets of the ligands, the central metal atoms and the counteranions.
