The role of low educational attainment on the pathway from adolescent internalizing and externalizing problems to early adult labour market disconnection in the Dutch TRAILS cohort

ABSTRACT
Mental health challenges in adolescence may affect labour market transitions young adulthood. Policies addressing early disconnection largely focus on school-leaving and educational attainment; however, the role of low attainment path from adolescent mental to is unclear. Using TRacking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey Netherlands (n = 1,197), we examined extent which achieving a basic qualification (by age 22) contemporary Dutch education system, mediates effect (age 11-19) adult disconnection, defined as 'not education, employment, or training' (NEET, 26). We estimated total effect, natural direct indirect effects, controlled effects internalizing externalizing symptoms NEET by gender. Among men, clinical levels were associated with 0.093 higher probability compared no (95% confidence interval, CI: 0.001, 0.440). The through accounted for 15.1% effect.
