Polyphenylene sulfide hydrophobic composite coating with high stability, corrosion resistance and antifouling performance

ABSTRACT
Abstract Although much work has been reported on superhydrophobic surfaces at this stage, most materials will face a wide variety of harsh environments in practical applications, and there will be serious challenges in the mechanical strength and corrosion resistance of coatings in such extreme environments. In this study, hydrophobic anti-corrosion coatings were prepared by combining hydrophobic coatings with conventional anti-corrosion coatings. Polyphenylene sulfide was firstly modified by carboxylation, and chitosan-polyphenylene sulfide nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending with chitosan as nano-filler. Chitosan as a natural biopolymer, not only has good corrosion resistance, but also can form an amide bond with carboxyl polyphenylene sulfide, thus achieving a mechanical interlocking structure and forming a tight crack-free surface. Then it was used as a coating and the surface of the coating was modified with polyvinylidene fluoride to obtain a double-layer composite coating with a water contact angle of 156±1.5° and sliding angle of 9 ± 1°. The corrosion performance of the coating was evaluated by a combination of laboratory tests (i.e., electrochemical polarization, neutral salt spray) and post-salt spray performance tests. The mechanical properties of the coating were evaluated by a scratch tester and pencil hardness method. The antifouling properties of the coating were also tested in liquids with different surface tensions. The results show that the composite coating exhibits good corrosion resistance, mechanical properties and antifouling properties and can be used as antifouling coating for different equipment and appliances and can provide long-term anti-corrosion protection for metals.
