ABSTRACT
PURPOSE: Gastric cancer studies indicated a potential correlation between circulating tumor cells (CTCs) in peripheral blood and relapse/metastasis. The prevalence significance of microemboli (CTM) gastric remain unknown. We investigated the prognostic value CTCs CTM for progression-free survival (PFS) overall (OS) patients. METHODS:Eighty-one patients consented to provide 5 ml before systematic therapy. were isolated using isolation by size epithelial characterized cytopathologists. For 41 stage IV patients, was as biomarker predict prognosis. RESULTS:CTCs detected 51 patients; average count 1.81. In clinical I, II, III, CTC counts 1.40, 0.67, 1.24, 2.71, respectively. 3 33 I IIIb at an 0.12 (0-2). 13 53 IIIc 1.26 (0-22). positivity correlated with CA125 level. PFS OS CTM-positive significantly lower than CTM-negative (P < .001). independent factor determining = .016) .003) multivariate analysis. Using markers epithelial-mesenchymal transition, single divided into three phenotypes including CTCs, biphenotypic epithelial/mesenchymal mesenchymal CTCs. CTM, CK−/Vimentin+/CD45− CK+/Vimentin+/CD45− observed, but CK+/Vimentin−/CD45− phenotype not. cell lines BGC823 MGC803. CONCLUSIONS: serum predictor shorter Thus, detection may be useful tool prognosis
