ABSTRACT
Fish scales are dermal armors with an attractive combination of resistance to puncture and flexibility. Past work has attributed this unique quality their composition the hierarchical stratification microstructure. Here, we show that ridge lines circuli contribute overall damage tolerance play a key role in "protectoflexibility" fish scales. Through application optical mechanics, channel along paths reduce effective stress intensity available for bulk fracture Furthermore, comparison line distribution elasmodine shows they across species appear be tuned combined functional requirements, i.e., threats locomotion. The importance these features multifunctional requirements is elucidated detail, including inspiring new approaches advancing structural materials.
