ABSTRACT
Objectives: Antimicrobial resistance is a serious threat to health and economic well-being worldwide. The impact of antibiotic-resistant infections reflected by higher mortality, increased lengths hospital stay (LOS), healthcare costs. We analyzed the direct costs attributable treating patients infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) in tertiary-care referral Vietnam. Methods: A retrospective descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted an intensive care unit (ICU) University Medical Center Ho Chi Minh City from June 2018 September 2019. Participants were ICU diagnosed either MRSA or CRE infection, non–multidrug-resistant organisms (non-MDROs) used as comparison group. records obtained collect data on medical services expenditures such medications, diagnostic testing, procedures, rooms. Statistical significance determined using Mann-Whitney Kruskal-Wallis tests for comparing average χ 2 test proportions. Results: In total, 227 patients, including 37 MRSA-infected 97 CRE-infected 93 non–MDRO-infected included study. additional treatment episode infection case (367.7 million VND ~US $16,000) (139.1 $6,043) 3.8 times ( P < .001) 1.5 .001), respectively, than cost non-MDRO (94.8 $4,121). Resource use that longer antibiotic (13.4 days), greater LOS (15.8 (additional 228.6 $9,939). Conclusions: Multidrug-resistant create heavy burden low- middle-income country like elevated mainly due LOS.
