Mixed methods study to understand the experiences of adults with acquired brain injury and their family members who receive specialised rehabilitation

ABSTRACT
Abstract Background and Aim: Rehabilitation therapy is a key part of the recovery pathway for people with severe acquired brain injury (ABI). The aim this study was to explore inpatients’ their family members’ experiences specialist ABI rehabilitation service. Methods: A cross sectional, prospective mixed method undertaken at metropolitan unit in Victoria, Australia. All inpatients members service were invited complete satisfaction survey. Employing purposive sampling, semi-structured interviews conducted and/or members. Results: In total, 111 completed survey 13 interviewed. High levels reported; majority (74%) (81%) rated overall quality care received as ‘high’ or ‘very high’. Interviews revealed four main themes: (i) services, (ii) inconsistent communication, (iii) variable nursing care, (iv) strengths weakness environment. Overall, important components positive experience being involved decision making discharge planning, effective communication information processes, able form therapeutic relationships staff. Key sources dissatisfaction related inconsistency accessing about treatments format easily understood, communication. Conclusion: Specialised valued by alike. findings highlight importance exploring inpatient optimise delivery tailored, specialised programme.
