ABSTRACT
Background: Epilepsy, a common neurologic condition, instigates large number of emergency room (ER) visits annually. This project aims to retrospectively review the patterns and characteristics Alberta ER by pediatric epilepsy patients. Methods: Health administrative databases, including Inpatient Discharge Abstract Database, National Ambulatory Care Reporting System, Diagnostic Imaging Medical Laboratory, were used identify utilization among children with in Alberta, Canada between 2012–2018. Results: Of 5,419 patients 2012–2018 59% developmentally delayed children. Children this particular group, when compared normal epilepsy, had following characteristics: they significantly more likely utilize ERs children’s hospitals versus other hospitals; presented at younger age; longer length stay; higher triage scores; subjected investigations; hospital admissions for epilepsy. Conclusions: Discussion: novel Alberta-wide study resource shows that use resources Whether is justified or not requires further study.
