ABSTRACT
Abstract Although chemical and radiological agents cause toxicity through different mechanisms, the multiorgan injuries caused by these threats share similarities that convene on level of basic biological responses. This publication will discuss areas convergence explore “multi-utility” approaches could be leveraged to address common injury mechanisms underlying actions in a threat-agnostic manner. In addition, we provide an overview current state threat research, US Government’s efforts toward medical preparedness, identify potential for collaboration geared enhancing preparedness response against threats. We also previous regulatory experience insight how navigate paths Food Drug Administration (FDA) approval/licensure/clearance products addressing or radiological/nuclear follows 2022 trans-agency meeting titled, “Overlapping Science Radiation Sulfur Mustard Exposures Skin Lung: Consideration Models, Mechanisms, Organ Systems, Medical Countermeasures,” sponsored National Institute Allergy Infectious Diseases (NIAID), part Institutes Health (NIH). Discussions from this explored overlapping nature radiation spurred increased interest one leads other. Herein, subject matter experts NIAID Biomedical Advanced Research Development Authority (BARDA), Strategic Preparedness Response (ASPR), summarize knowledge gained recently funded biomedical as well insights meeting. These topics include identification collaboration, use biomarkers both hazards, widely available treatments treat damage
