ABSTRACT
Naringin, a major flavonoid in citrus, has potential for preventing atherosclerosis. The presence the colon of large amount naringin after oral intake might affect gut microbiota. We investigated role microbiota remodeling alleviation atherosclerosis by naringin. Naringin significantly alleviated and lowered serum liver cholesterol levels 24.04 28.37% ApoE–/– mice fed with high-fat diet. Nontarget metabolomics showed that modulated hepatic derivatives bile acids. increased excretion acids neutral sterols 1.6- 4.3-fold, respectively. main pathway which was microbiota–liver–cholesterol axis. abundances salt hydrolase- 7α-dehydroxylase-producing bacteria, promoting acid synthesis from upregulating CYP7A1 via suppression FXR/FGF15 pathway. In addition, facilitated reverse transport downregulating PCSK9/IDOL. results provide insight into atherosclerosis-alleviation mechanisms citrus flavonoids scientific basis development functional foods containing flavonoids.
