ABSTRACT
The stratum corneum represents the first skin barrier against chemical and physical damage. These unique properties are based on its peculiar lipid composition with ceramides (CERs) as main protagonists. In this study, structural of α-OH phytosphingosine [AP] CER class have been investigated. CERs present in their d-forms; however, most model systems diastereomer mixture synthetically produced l-form is used. d-form well-known to form a hydrogen bonding network that helps reduce permeability matrix, while does not show any formation. paper, 2D (monolayers) 3D (aqueous dispersions) models used thoroughly study physical–chemical behaviors CER[AP] diastereomers taking into account how symmetry chain pattern influences behavior molecules. chains both arrange an oblique unit cell, but only d-CER[AP] forms supramolecular lattice (subgel phase) systems. Interestingly, play role structure formation since dictates packing properties. 1:1 phase separates two domains: one composed practically pure other certain amount
