ABSTRACT
The widespread occurrence of zwitterionic compounds in nature has incited their frequent use designing biomimetic materials. Therefore, polymers are a thriving field. A particular interest for this polymer class currently focused on establishing neutral, low-fouling surfaces. After highlighting strategies to prepare model surfaces as well those that more suitable practical purposes relying strongly radical polymerization methods, we present recent efforts diversify the structure hitherto quite limited variety monomers and derived polymers. We identify key structural variables, consider influence essential properties such overall hydrophilicity long-term stability, discuss promising targets synthesis new variants.
