ABSTRACT
Coordination of synapses onto electrodes with high specificity and maintaining a stable long-lasting interface have importance in the field neural interfaces. One potential approach is to present ligands on surface that would be bound through protein–protein interaction specific areas neuronal cells. Here, we functionalize electrode surfaces genetically engineered neuroligin-1 protein demonstrate formation nascent presynaptic bouton upon binding neurexin-1 β membrane neurons. The resulting synaptically connected shows an assembly proteins comparable exocytosis kinetics native synapses. Importantly, neuroligin-1-induced synapse–electrode exhibits type structural robustness. We envision use synaptic adhesion modified may lead new approaches interfacing circuity electronics.
