ABSTRACT
Ferroptosis–apoptosis, a new modality of induced cell death dependent on reactive oxygen species, has drawn tremendous attention in the field nanomedicine. A metal-free ferroptosis–apoptosis inducer was reported based boron and nitrogen codoped graphdiyne (BN-GDY) that possesses efficient glutathione (GSH) depletion capability concurrently induces ferroptosis by deactivation GSH-dependent peroxidases 4 (GPX4) apoptosis downregulation Bcl2. The high catalytic activity BN-GDY is explicated both kinetic experiments density functional theory (DFT) calculations Gibbs free energy change during hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) decomposition. In addition, unique sequence Bi–Bi mechanism discovered, which distinct from commonly ping-pong most peroxidase mimics natural enzymes. We anticipate this nonmetal therapeutic concept carbon-based nanomaterials would provide proof-of-concept evidence for nanocatalytic medicines cancer therapy.
