ABSTRACT
Compliant sutures surrounded by stiff matrices are present in biological armors and carapaces, providing enhanced mechanical performance. Understanding the mechanisms through which these sutured composites achieve outstanding properties is key to developing engineering materials with improved strength toughness. This article studies impact of suture geometry load direction on performance joints using a two-stage reactive polymer resin that enables facile photopatterning heterogeneity within single network. sinusoidal varying geometries photopatterned into matrices, generating modulus contrast 2 orders magnitude. Empirical relationships developed connecting wavelength amplitude composite under parallel perpendicular loading conditions. Results indicate greater interdigitation broadly improves when applied but has deleterious effects joint. Investigations failure highlight interplay between crack growth stability after damage initiation occurs. Our findings could enable framework for bio-inspired structures future.
