ABSTRACT
Synthetic small-diameter vascular grafts (<6 mm) are used in the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, including coronary artery disease, but fail much more readily than similar made from autologous tissue. A promising approach to improve patency rates synthetic is promote adhesion endothelial cells luminal surface graft. In this study, we characterized chemical and topographic changes imparted on poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA), an emerging hydrogel graft material, after exposure various reactive ion plasma (RIP) treatments, how these dissipate storage a sealed environment at standard temperature pressure, effect colony-forming (ECFCs). We showed that RIP treatments O2, N2, or Ar two radiofrequency powers, 50 100 W, improved ECFC compared untreated PVA different degrees for each treatment, responsible increased cell affinity samples treated allowed age 230 days. aging RIP-treated using assay quantify ECFCs 48 h seeding, atomic force microscopy probe topography, scanning electron visualize modifications, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy investigate chemistry. Our results show higher RF exhibits roughness greater levels charged nitrogen species across all precursor gases modifications beneficial attachment ECFCs. This study important our understanding stability such as
