ABSTRACT
Selenium compounds exhibit chemopreventative properties at supranutritional doses, but the efficacy of selenium supplementation in cancer prevention is dependent on chemical speciation supplement and its metabolites. The uptake, speciation, distribution common selenoamino acid supplements, selenomethionine (SeMet) Se-methylselenocysteine (MeSeCys), A549 human lung cells were investigated using X-ray absorption fluorescence spectroscopies. spectroscopy bulk cell pellets treated with acids for 24 h showed that while was found exclusively carbon-bound forms SeMet-treated cells, a diselenide component identified MeSeCys-treated addition to species. microscopy single accumulated sulfur perinuclear region after h, microprobe near-edge this indicated rather than sulfur-bound. studies both content much lower cells. distributed homogeneously throughout
