ABSTRACT
Different bacterial cell surface associated biomolecules can be analyzed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry and coupled with collision induced dissociation (CID) for identification. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an opportunistic, Gram-negative bacterium that causes acute or chronic biofilm infections. Cells of P. communicate through a system signaling known as quorum sensing (QS). The QS result in the production biosurfactant rhamnolipids to associate alter cellular membrane. MALDI-TOF utilizes variety matrices interact differently selective ionization. We examined six common determine optimal matrix specific different molecule classes surfaces. Three major (quinolones, rhamnolipids, phospholipids) were observed ionize selectively tested. Sodiated protonated adducts differed between utilized our study. Isobaric ions identified depending on used. highlight role selection identification molecules within complex biological mixture.
