ABSTRACT
There is continuing controversy regarding predictors of poor outcome following mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This study aimed to prospectively examine the influence preinjury factors, injury-related and postinjury factors on mTBI.Participants were 123 patients with mTBI 100 trauma patient controls recruited assessed in emergency department followed up 1 week 3 months postinjury. Outcome was measured terms reported postconcussional symptoms. Measures included ImPACT Post-Concussional Symptom Scale cognitive concussion battery, including Attention, Verbal Visual memory, Processing Speed Reaction Time modules, pre- SF-36 MINI Psychiatric status ratings, VAS Pain Inventory, Hospital Anxiety Depression Scale, PTSD Checklist-Specific, Revised Social Readjustment Scale.Presence predicted symptoms postinjury, along being female premorbid psychiatric history, elevated HADS anxiety a concurrent indicator. However, at months, physical or problems but not most strongly symptoms, indicators anxiety, other life stressors pain. age 3-month PCS group, whereas significant for controls. Cognitive measures predictive months.Given evident both problems, especially managing response vulnerable individuals may be important minimize ongoing sequelae.
