Communication between VA providers and sexual and gender minority veterans: A pilot study.

ABSTRACT
Approximately one million gay and lesbian Americans are veterans, rates of engagement in the Veterans Affairs (VA) health care system may be increasing for both sexual gender minority veterans. Very little research has examined experience these veterans when receiving at VA facilities. The purpose this study was to explore experiences, beliefs, preferences lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgender (LGBT) their communication with providers. LGBT (n = 58) participated focus groups individual interviews completed self-report measures two southern hospitals. 2/3 report that none providers have specifically asked about orientation, 24% indicate they not disclosed orientation any provider. Although some want initiate discussions, also expressed fears disclosure its possible negative consequences. Similarly, varied opinions appropriateness routine assessment status. Only 28% as welcoming them Systematic training is needed all rationale assessing orientation. Staff education should include specific skills initiating assessments, ways responding veteran concerns discussing topic system.
