ABSTRACT
Objective: Individuals with sickle cell disease (SCD) are at increased risk for complications from their during adolescent and young adult (AYA) years.The of morbidity in AYA SCD can be decreased improved self-management.Existing self-management interventions typically focus on one aspect (e.g., adherence) do not address factors that activate patients (knowledge, motivation, self-efficacy social support) to self-manage.Sickle Cell Thrive (SCThrive) is a mixed in-person/online, technology-enhanced (use mobile app), group intervention targets patient activation.To determine the most clinically-significant components, qualitative study was conducted.Methods: Participants were 19 (M age=17.05)with who participated individual semi-structured phone interviews after completing SCThrive.Interview content coded using grounded-theory approach generate themes related SCThrive's feasibility, acceptability, motivation impact self-management.Results: SCThrive reported highly feasible due in-person/online format acceptable because they learned skills manage AYAs SCD.Action planning pain/mood tracking appeared key motivating self-management.Participants continuing use post-SCThrive (self-efficacy) including applying them other domains lives educational/vocational).Conclusions: Study results provide data leveraged enhance interventions.Findings also inform clinical mHealth increase this population.
