ABSTRACT
Inflammation is the physiologic reaction to cellular and tissue damage caused by trauma, ischemia, infection, other pathologic conditions. Elevation of white blood cell count (WBC) altered levels acute phase reactants are cardinal signs inflammation, but dynamics these changes their resolution not well established. Here we studied inflammatory recovery from infection tracking longitudinal clinical laboratory measurements in hospitalized patients. We identified a universal trajectory defined exponential WBC decay delayed linear growth platelet (PLT). Co-regulation WBC-PLT fundamental mechanism provides generic approach for identifying high-risk patients: 32x relative risk (RR) adverse outcomes cardiac surgery, 9x RR death COVID-19, sepsis, 5x myocardial infarction.
