ABSTRACT
Abstract The purpose of the study was to determine whether changes in body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) middle-aged elderly Chinese are associated with metabolic syndrome. In this cohort investigation, 3697 people aged 45 or over were recruited from China Health Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). National Cholesterol Education Program Adult Treatment Panel III (2005) defined syndrome (MetS). With Cox regression analysis, we calculated hazard ratio (HR) 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for MetS based on BMI-WC change categories. To assess prevalence MetS, BMI WC levels classified into four quartiles their relative absolute changes. subjects whose decreased (HR = 0.338; CIs 0.264, 0.433) as well those increased 0.375; 0.228, 0.499), risk significantly lower compared increases both WC. Regarding BMI, lowest percentile males 0.302; 0.204, 0.448) females 0.486; 0.354, 0.667) Similar results observed WC, quantile having a significant impact 0.170; 0.107, 0.270) 0.303; 0.217, 0.424). Chinese. A reduced risks people.
