ABSTRACT
Genomic surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 in Portugal was rapidly implemented by the National Institute Health early stages COVID-19 epidemic, collaboration with more than 50 laboratories distributed nationwide.By applying recent phylodynamic models that allow integration individual-based travel history, we reconstructed and characterized spatio-temporal dynamics introductions dissemination Portugal. We detected at least 277 independent introductions, mostly from European countries (namely United Kingdom, Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland), which were consistent highest connectivity Portugal. Although most estimated to have occurred during March 2020, it is likely silently circulating throughout February, before first cases confirmed. Here conclude earlier implementation measures could minimized number subsequent virus expansion This study lays foundation for genomic epidemiology Portugal, highlights need systematic geographically-representative surveillance.
