ABSTRACT
A retrospective case-control study was conducted to investigate risk factors for endophthalmitis following routine intraocular surgery.A review performed of consecutive cases from three teaching hospitals in the western Sydney region and matched controls same institutions between 1996 1998.There were 31 66 controls. Eighty procedures phacoemulsification, 15 conventional extracapsular cataract extraction, two penetrating keratoplasties. Of 80 patients who had phacoemulsification surgery, 50 a clear corneal incision, 26 scleral incision (four unknown). Logistic regression showed an increased with surgical complications (P = 0.002) cornea temporal incisions 0.007). Risk reduced use subconjunctival injections 0.008). The yield Gram stain 47% culture 67%. Anterior chamber tap addition vitreous biopsy alone did not increase microorganism 0.78). Mean visual acuity on presentation hand movement 13 (50%) showing improvement intravitreal antibiotics 0.003). Visual prognosis correlate presenting but appeared be better those grew Staphylococcus epidermidis or negative.Although this is unable draw definite conclusions regarding sufficient data suggest importance type location. Surgical complication important factor endophthalmitis. Use antibiotic at conclusion procedure recommended.
