ABSTRACT

Rationale & Objective
Enhanced informed consent tools improve patient engagement. A novel visual aid measured potential donors' risk tolerance to postdonation kidney failure and assessed if the closeness of relationship intended recipient altered willingness accept risk.
Study Design
Cross-sectional analysis donor evaluations at time enrollment into a longitudinal mixed-methods study between November 2014 February 2016.
Setting Participants
Three US transplant centers. English-speaking adults presenting for in-person living evaluation.
Exposure
Closeness recipient.
Outcome
Willingness failure.
Analytical Approach
The Donor-Specific Risk Questionnaire, dot matrix diagram, was used measure Multivariable logistic regression associations acceptance data from social science instruments, which perceived with Qualitative were analyzed thematically per grounded theory.
Results
307 participants (response rate: 86%) completed testing. 96% indicated 0.9% or greater. Those who older (OR, 0.98 [95% CI, 0.96-0.99]), women 0.54 0.31-0.93]), Black 0.25 0.08-0.76]) less likely be in medium versus low group. independently associated greater (for every 1-point score, odds ratios being high groups 1.21 1.03-1.41] 2.42 1.53-3.82] compared group). With exception parental relationships, biological linkages not accepting higher
Limitations
First demonstration that one estimate provided all participants. estimates customized different demographic groups.
Conclusions
Relationship Visual aids can provide teams individualized perspectives on thresholds potentially facilitate patient-centered care donors.
