ABSTRACT
Abstract Visceral pain that affects the distal structures of the pelvis can be treated by blocking the nerve fibers at the level of the ganglion impar. Two basic approaches, through the anococcygeal ligament and the transsacrococcygeal approach, have been described with some variations. Neurolysis can be performed either with 6% phenol or cryoablation. Published results are few: 2 studies totaling 36 patients showed good efficacy for visceral perineal pain, whereas 1 study with 20 patients showed no efficacy for coccygodynia. There are no reported complications. Copyright © 2001 by W.B. Saunders Company
