ABSTRACT
Abstract Commiphora gileadensis, locally known as becham, is a plant used in traditional Arabian medicine for treating headache, constipation, stomach, joint pain, and inflammatory disorders. Several studies have reported its antibacterial properties; however, no study has demonstrated antiviral activity. This aimed to evaluate the activity of C. gileadensis well isolate active compound investigate mode action. was evaluated using 4 viruses, herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2), respiratory syncytial B (RSV-B), coxsackie 3, adenovirus 5 by performing plaque reduction assay 3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assays enveloped nonenveloped respectively. The methanol extract leaves only showed against viruses with selectivity index 11.19 10.25 HSV-2 RSV-B, mechanism underlying virucidal effect direct contact these target viruses. compound, isolated bio-guided involving TLC, identified guggulsterone HPLC-diode array detection coupled electrospray ionization mass spectrometry. Guggulsterone an antagonist bile acid receptor modulator cholesterol metabolism; antimicrobial properties been first time this study.
