ABSTRACT
Significance Deletion of genes in organisms does not always give rise to phenotypes because the existence compensation, even though may be found when gene activity is blocked acutely. The cGMP-dependent kinase II knockout a typical example this apparent paradox. shows no evident impairment LTP, whereas acute inhibition significantly decreases it. This paper describes previously unidentified form network-based compensation for that dependent on expression duplicate or paralogous genes. Furthermore, described here mediated by mechanism similar used activity-dependent homeostatic synaptic plasticity, suggesting neurons complex brains overcome an unexpected genetic lesion using existing mechanisms.
