ABSTRACT
Significance Inspired by the survival war between “spear” of mantis shrimps with Bouligand-type microstructures and “shield” abalone nacreous staggered architectures, we design an architecture, a combination Bouligand structures, which enables excellent fracture resistance crack orientation insensitivity.
