ABSTRACT
In 1997, the prevalence of anaemia was 40·9 % among children aged 6–59 months in State Pernambuco, north-east Brazil. Using same sample children, we have investigated possible reasons for this high prevalence. A representative selected through a three-stage process: proportional systematic random sampling municipalities State, census sectors within these municipalities, and finally, simple households with to obtain 650 children. Data collection included demographic, environmental, socio-economic maternal variables, nutritional status dietary intakes Multiple linear regression analysis based on hierarchical model factors associated Hb concentration. The mean concentration 6–23 10 g/l lower than that older analysis, child age explained 8·3 variance intake bioavailable Fe further 3·3, serum retinol 2·7, diarrhoea 2·4, water treatment 1·7, sanitation 1·3 low birth-weight 0·5 %. final 23·4 We conclude age, bioavailable-Fe intake, concentration, diarrhoea, treatment, are independently Brazil, prevention programmes should focus those <2 years consider feasible strategies improve vitamin A, reduce infection. Supplemental be given infants.
