ABSTRACT
The identity of Scolelepis squamata (O.F. Müller, 1806 O. F., Abildgaard, P. C., Vahl, M., Holten, J. S., & Rathke, (1806). Zoologia Danica seu Animalium Daniae et Norvegiae rariorum ac minus notorum. Descriptiones historia (Vol. 4. Volume Atlas). N. Christensen. [Google Scholar]) (Spionidae) has long been under debate. For clarification this problem a collection specimens at the type locality species, island Helgoland (North Sea) and in particular Dunes, undertaken. Based on morphological molecular studies occurrence only one species can be reported eulittoral zone. are good accordance with morphology S. squamata. these newly collected is redescribed illustrated comprehensively, and, addition, information several markers provided. A neotype designated deposited Zoological Museum Hamburg University, Germany. Molecular phylogenetic analyses based COI, 18S rRNA 28S reveal little genetic diversity along Atlantic coast from to Portugal thus support coastal regions Eastern North Ocean. Our results further indicate presence distinct Black Sea, which closely related Also, mesnili reinstated as valid species. Furthermore, it shown that earlier had misidentified wrongly foliosa or bonnieri, highlighting need for taxonomic redescription well providing DNA barcodes unambiguously identified specimens.http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank.org:pub:0D6C3783-FF06-4D84-8D92-B8691E88F0B9
