ABSTRACT
We compared the efficacy of topical nitroglycerin and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) on survival random-pattern skin flaps in rats. Thirty Wistar albino rats were used a dorsal, cranially-based flap was raised. The divided into three groups 10 each. first group had only raised while second third given 5 mg or TENS for one hour day seven days. amount necrosis measured seventh postoperative day. mean area 726.2, 544.2, 150.0 mm 2 control, nitroglycerin, groups, respectively. percentage that necrosed 51.9, 38.9, 10.7 corresponding groups. significantly higher surviving than control (p 3 0.0001) = 0.002). TENS, with its negligible side-effects, could be reliable treatment. Clinically, it can easily postoperatively when become ischaemic, will tolerated well by patients.
