ABSTRACT
The aim of our study is to describe the unusual clinical manifestations smooth-muscle tumors (SMTs) in patients with acquired immunodeficiency virus (AIDS) and demonstrate association between Epstein-Barr (EBV) infection SMTs.Nine AIDS SMTs were characterized at Chulalongkorn Hospital (Bangkok, Thailand) from 2001 through 2003. Tumor tissues suitable for immunohistochemical analysis situ hybridization assayed EBV, respectively. Plasma serum samples tested EBV by real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction serologic analysis. The included 8 adults 1 child (3 males 6 females). All had CD4 cell counts <200 cells/microL. By end study, 3 died, survived. sites epidura (5 intracranial 4 intraspinal SMTs), vocal cords (2), adrenal glands abdominal wall iris (1), liver lung orbit thigh (1). Seven multicentric involving only (4 extra- (3), or extracranial which occurred either concurrently sequentially. We found evidence infection, as determined hybridization, all SMTs. Furthermore, DNA was detectable plasma 2 patients. results consistent past infection.SMTs typically arise multiple very that are not often observed among immunocompetent individuals. Our series also suggests AIDS. exact role oncogenesis awaits further study.
