ABSTRACT
Peroxiredoxin 5 (PRDX5) is a newly discovered thioredoxin peroxidase able to reduce peroxides that implicated in antioxidant protective mechanisms. We report here its expression the human thyroid gland. Twentyseven specimens were examined by immunohistochemistry. They included six normal tissues, five multinodular goiters, nine hot nodules, two Hürthle cell adenomas, and thyroids from patients with Graves' disease. In control tissue, PRDX5 was heterogeneous, being stronger cubical functionally active follicular cells than flat quiescent thyrocytes. It diffuse cytoplasm, occasionally localized inclusions most likely corresponded mitochondria.
