ABSTRACT
† Background and Aims About 6 % of an estimated total 240 000 species angiosperms are dioecious. The main precursors this sexual system thought to be monoecy gynodioecy.A previous angiosperm-wide study revealed that many dioecious have evolved through the pathway; some case studies a large body theoretical research also provide evidence in support gynodioecy pathway. If plants pathway, gynodioecious should co-occur same genera. However, date, no large-scale analysis has been conducted determine prevalence pathway angiosperms. In study, gap knowledge was addressed by performing survey order test for co-occurrence as pathway.† Methods Data from different sources were compiled obtain (to our knowledge) largest dataset on available, with 275 genera include at least one species. This combined dioecy literature, made how often could found using contingency table framework.† Key Results It that, overall, angiosperm both occur more frequently than expected, agreement pathway.Importantly, trend holds when studying classes separately (or sub-classes, orders families), suggesting is not restricted few taxa but may instead widespread angiosperms.† Conclusions This work complements previously carried out suggests common angiosperms. The results identify families where all) precursors. These targets future small-scale transitions taking phylogeny explicitly into account.
