ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction In kidney transplant patients, ureteric stents have been used to treat, and attempt minimize the risk of, major urological complications (MUCs). 2013 we published a Cochrane review (7 trials) demonstrating efficacy of reduce MUC. This study updates that landmark publication including more recent trials. Methods The Kidney Transplant Specialised Register was searched identify (quasi-) randomised controlled trials include in meta-analysis. Confidence evidence assessed using Grading Recommendations Assessment, Development Evaluation (GRADE) approach. Results A further 4 studies since paper. With moderate certainty evidence, prophylactic stenting reduces MUC for both urine leak obstruction (11 studies: 1834 participants: RR 0.30, 95% CI 0.16 0.55; P < 0.0001; I2 = 16% number needed treat 17). contrast previous version this review, subgroup analysis shows situ short duration (≤14 days) long (>14 reduced It is uncertain whether has an impact on development urinary tract infection (UTI) across 10 (very low certainty). We found UTI not increased with short-duration (9 versus no stent. graft patient survival other stent-related remains uncertain. Conclusions Routine incidence MUCs, even days). unclear.
