ABSTRACT
Abstract Fishery discard survival depends on multiple conditions; caution is essential when study outputs are employed to support management decisions. The presents a stepwise procedure, devised estimate survival, that accounts for the variability characterizing commercial fishing practices. procedure was applied first performed onboard rapido trawlers targeting Solea solea in Mediterranean Sea. Undersized specimens collected during sorting were assessed vitality; some retained captive observation. main drivers affecting at time of catch (immediate survival) identified and used outline four different operational conditions set (scenarios). Immediate each scenario subsequently modified by applying hazard coefficient after 5 days observation relation vitality class, thus obtaining relative estimates following discarding. Temperature air exposure duration found exert major effect with weight seabed type being additional important factors. rate showed an aggregate value 22.9% (10.5–33.4%). Scenario approach can enhance our understanding stressors influencing survival. outcomes discussed explore potential applications identification mitigation strategies.
