ABSTRACT
Campylobacter spp. are a frequent cause of diarrhoea in man, originating mostly from poultry. It has been suggested that the veterinary use antibiotics is largely responsible for resistance human isolates, particularly to quinolones. During 6 month period June December 1998, 677 isolates were obtained healthy poultry and pigs. Samples taken at Belgian slaughterhouses. Species identification was performed by biochemical tests, multiplex PCR SDS–PAGE whole-cell proteins. The vitro susceptibility six antimicrobial drugs determined agar dilution method. jejuni found more often than coli (79% C. versus 21% coli). In pigs situation reversed (6 94%). Erythromycin significantly higher (P < 0.05) coli, isolated (67.2%). Alarmingly high rates ciprofloxacin also noted, broilers (62.1%). latter indicates humans could derive animals.
