ABSTRACT
Abstract Introduction Approximately two thirds of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) suffer from chronic insomnia. Current behavioral interventions for insomnia in ASD use sleep hygiene guidelines to educate parents and their regarding promoting habits. However, the relationship between pre-bedtime physical activity/light is understudied ASD. The current study examined daily associations actigraphically assessed levels objective/subjective outcomes Methods Thirty (Mage=8.5 yrs, SD=1.78 yrs) comorbid completed 14 days actigraphy measuring ambient white light intensity activity every 30 seconds. Validated scoring algorithms (in Actiware V. 6.0.9) estimated objective onset latency (SOL), total time (TST), wake after (WASO), average 30, 60, 120 mins prior bedtime. Additionally, 120-240, 240-360 bedtime were computed. Children also diaries (with parental assistance) subjective reports same parameters. Associations estimations levels, light, nighttime through multilevel modelling. Bonferroni corrections performed account multiple comparisons. Results After (p<.025 significance level), greater within minutes (B=0.0465, p=.0093) 60 (B=0.0681, p=.0005) associated longer SOL. Pre-bedtime exposure was not a significant predictor outcomes. Conclusion suggest that general, variations activity, but are worse nightly SOL Findings support recommendations include avoidance higher pre-sleep activity. Prospective studies examining temporal causal relationships warranted. Support Research supported by University Missouri Board award (McCrae, PI; Mazurek, Co-PI).
