ABSTRACT
The bestrophin isoform, bestrophin‐3 (Best3), acts as a calcium‐activated chloride channel in cardiomyocytes and vascular smooth muscle. It may have cell‐protective functions other cell types. Best3 be regulated by cyclic GMP exists different splice variants. We examined expression localization of mouse kidney on the mRNA level using RT‐PCR protein immunohistochemistry Western blotting. Staining for was obtained glomeruli, also detected cultured podocytes. blot confirmed presence cortex. did not co‐localize with markers endothelial cells or podocyte foot processes. However, it co‐localized intermediate filament nestin, suggesting primary processes bodies. In cortex, glomerulus‐enriched fractions podocytes two shortest variants, but no full‐length mRNA, were detected. conclusion, variants Best3, lacking some predicted transmembrane segments, are expressed kidney, likely filaments.
