ABSTRACT
Rectal intussusception may be the initial abnormality of a progressive pelvic floor disorder culminating in external prolapse. The evidence, however, is unclear, and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying this condition are unknown. The aim study to identify relationship between age, symptom duration, anorectal physiology parameters, type intussusception/prolapse order appreciate natural history condition. All female patients diagnosed proctographically with rectorectal/rectoanal or prolapse 1994 2007 were studied. Demographics, results compared these proctographic groups. Patients repeat evaluation also analyzed separately. This investigation was conducted at tertiary academic colorectal center.A total 1014 women (median 51; range, 16-96), including 32 who underwent proctography, analyzed. The primary outcomes measured differences median parameters groups. The cohort exhibited statistically significant difference (p = 0.0001) age groups older rectoanal rather than rectorectal intussusception, which supported by uni- multivariate modeling. Symptom duration different 0.0002) (60 months; 1-936) rectal patient (36 2-732). had lower anal resting (median, 41 versus 77 cmH2O) squeeze pressures 40 56 intussusception. Within 2 years, 19.2% 3.8% on proctogram demonstrated progression prolapse. This limited its retrospective nature.Rectal an leading prolapse, but appears happen infrequently. Long-term observational studies required fully understand history.
