ABSTRACT
In Brief Purpose: To describe, in a group of patients with moderately advanced retinitis pigmentosa (RP), the prevalence cystoid macular edema (CME), variation foveal thickness over 48-week period, correlation visual acuity (VA) retinal thickness, and lack response CME to lutein administration. Methods: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging macula clinical examination were evaluated for 77 eyes 39 RP 11 months, scan done every 6 weeks. Results: The CME, defined by cysts visible on OCT, was 49%. Bilateral present 44% (17 39), an additional two had unilateral CME. Central varied little 48 Sixty-six percent VA 20/40 or better. worse than either greater degrees thickening fact lower measures. For without tended have highly concordant between eyes, did not differ significantly groups Lutein show statistically significant effect nor such observed subgroups vision better 20/40. Conclusion: rate is higher previous reports, perhaps because some preserved use definition based OCT findings. Retinal remains fairly stable time, both authors describe administration (RP) participating randomized trial supplementation.
