ABSTRACT
Purpose To study how many of the patients with treated glaucoma or ocular hypertension go blind during their lifetime and which factors are associated blindness. Patients The data on 106 consecutive who had died between 1991 2002 was retrospectively evaluated. At diagnosis 39 primary open-angle glaucoma, 27 exfoliation 40 hypertension. Methods Clinical records causes death were reviewed. Visual disability at last visit before Outcome measures visual handicap blindness based acuity and/or fields. Results visit, 17 [16%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 9-23] visually handicapped. Thirteen (14%) bilaterally blind. Glaucoma cause in one both eyes 16 (15%, CI 8-22) 6 (6%, 1-10). In analysis only 1 eye each patient, cumulative incidence glaucoma-caused 6% (95% 2-11) 5 years, 9% 4-15) 10 15% 9-23) 15 years. An advanced stage diagnosis, fluctuation intraocular pressure treatment, presence syndrome, poor patient compliance increased occurrence Positive family history vascular no effect outcome. Conclusions Glaucoma-caused an compliance. risk going from 6%.
